Opening Hours : Open from 7am to 9pm. Pedestrian Gates are always open.
Access is from Majors Rd, O’Halloran Hill, from the Ranger’s Station Carpark.
Things to See and Do:
Loop Trail: From the Ranger’s Station Carpark there is a Loop trail that takes you a significant way around Glenthorne, almost down to the southern-most end. Walking at a very leisurely pace it will take you about 2 hours to walk this trail. There are also numerous other minor paths within the Park besides the main loop trail.
Nature Play Ground: This is a stunning play area for all ages, a joint project of DEW and City of Marion.
Heritage Precinct: Some old buildings and structures have been restored, the remaining will be restored in the future.
Heritage Sugar Gum Avenue: This avenue of Eyre Peninsula and Kangaroo Island Eucalypts defines the old main road to Victor Harbor, and the Mail Run.
What you will see: Birds: There have been around 90 bird species seen regularly at Glenthorne, including numerous families of Striated Pardalotes (one of Australia’s smallest bird species), Superb Fairywren, Shelduck, Hardhead Duck, Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo, and since late 2021, Wedge-tailed Eagles.
Billabong: The site of the first Revegetation work of the Friends of Glenthorne in the 2002.
Facilities: Public toilets, Free Electric BBQs and Power Point & picnic areas, lawned area.
Caring for Glenthorne:
- Please take away everything you bring to Glenthorne, except your photos and foot prints. It would be great if you remember to bring a spare bag to pick up and take away anyone else’s rubbish, if you find any. We would greatly appreciate your help with this.
- If you bring your pet, it must remain on a leash at all times. As we continue to expand the native habitat at Glenthorne, the number of native animals living at Glenthorne will increase, including spiders, snakes and lizards, and we don’t want you, or your pet to scare them away.
Be Prepared and Stay Safe:
- Glenthorne is part of the Greater Adelaide Fire District, and during the dryer months the significant weed challenge also greatly increases the risk of fire at Glenthorne. We ask you to be particularly diligent in this regard in hot weather.
- The park will be closed on days of High Fire Danger.
Get Involved
We hope you have enjoyed your time at Glenthorne.
- How do you like the progress? In the last six years over 200,000 native trees and shrubs have been planted in the park. The challenge now is to establish the lower storey of plants, the lillies, daisies, heaths, orchids, grasses, and water-way plants, that will grow in between these trees and shrubs.
- We are a vibrant volunteer group, that have been involved at Glenthorne for 20 years before it became a National Park. We are passionate to restore this land to become a healthy Open Grassy Woodland again.
- We currently have weekly BushCare days, 1st & 2nd Saturdays (10am) or 3rd Sundays (10am) and every Wednesday (9am). See our Website for current day and time updates; Subscribe to our BushCarers email list, by sending an email to BushCarers-join@FriendsOfGlenthorne.org.au
- We are excited about the proposed Native Plant Propagation Nursery that will be completed in August 2026 at the “Riding for Disabled” precinct, just opposite Glenthorne, to enable us to expand the current 54 small densely planted areas in the park and restore the weeded areas to native habitat. Many volunteers are needed to propagate and plant many hundreds of thousands of small native plants, daisies, lillies, heaths, orchids. Subscribe to our Nursery Email list by sending an email to nursery-join@FriendsOfGlenthorne.org.au
- If you are interested in Glenthorne Heritage, then contact us for further involvement with volunteer opportunities, not just at the Glenthorne precinct, but also at O’Halloran Hill, Marino, Hallett Cove, and the Field River, for buildings and structures of our by-gone era.
