For the last two months, we have been privileged to host two visits from the Kate Cox Community Children's Centre. A small group of 10 or so children, and carers, spend a few hours at Glenthorne. Below is a short review of these visits, by their co-ordinator, Bri. |
| |
|
We emphasise the playground for many reasons as well, and want to ensure we are offering a large chunk of uninterrupted time for children to play here. At childcare, we share a small yard with 2 and 3 year old’s and so there’s not much space or challenges available for our older children who seek risks, speed, balance, and wide spaces. We notice when the children play at Glenthorne playground that they use the play equipment for a short time but then they often gravitate towards the natural spaces and resources like the rocks, sticks, sand, creek etc. and play here for hours without needing any input for adults. We really value the importance of offering this time and space for children to explore in their own ways as well as the walking loop. Children this age need to develop their physical strength, gross motor skills, risk-taking and risk-assessment, etc. and this is achieved by giving them time to play and explore freely in the space. This is a core purpose of the trip for us. Free play is a fundamentally important part of early childhood development. |

Release of Rare Butterfly
|
| |
|
The Mottled Grass-skipper (Anisynta cynone cynone) is a fairly rare subspecies of butterfly in the family Hesperiidae found in South Australia (coastal Yorke/Fleurieu Peninsulas to Robe).
It is a small, brown skipper, with a 20mm wingspan, that inhabits coastal areas. Adults fly for a short, single generation in autumn (mid-March to April).
This past week 79 of these butterflies were translocated, from Maslin's Beach area to Glenthorne National Park near the Billabong area. Alex from Ento Search (www.entosearch.com.au), and Matt from Green Adelaide, and their team.
They are only seen for a short time each year, after the first Autumn rains. The eggs hatch and the tiny caterpillar forms a cocoon on the fresh new grass growth from the rain.
During their very short life, the butterfly remains in same small area they metamorphosed, about 20m2 or so.

Each month, on "The Third Sunday", the Friends of Glenthorne are hosting a BBQ.
We will start BushCare as normal, at 10am, and then break for lunch to host a BBQ. Bring your family, invite your friends, or invite one of the Park Users to join us for a bit of social interaction.
GrassLand BushCare
Also, on the Third Sunday of each month, recent doctorate graduate of Adelaide Uni, Max, will continue BushCare on his Glenthorne research area, the Community Grassland. This Grassland BushCare will also start at 10am.
There is much to learn about Grasslands, and Max is willing to share his knowledge.

Fungi workshops in City of Marion
|
| |
|
The City of Marion are partnering with Fungimap, a national organisation dedicated to increasing our understanding of fungi, conservation, and it’s role in biodiversity.
As part of this project, Fungimap will undertake a desktop survey of historical fungi observations in City of Marion, with the aim of building baseline knowledge on the species diversity and abundance locally. This will help us monitor changes in fungi distribution and assist with further studies.
Going forward, we want to do a much better job at recording the fungi that grows here, and to do that we need your help! We have organised two workshops; one at Warriparinga (indoor session in Living Kaurna Cultural Centre) and another at Oaklands Wetlands (indoor session to be held at Marion Outdoor Pool). Please see below for more details:
