Glenthorne National Park BushCare

This Sunday, (4/6/2023) is our First Sunday Friends Bushcare Day for June.

The weather forecast looks fairly favourable, which is pretty good for the first Bushcare in Winter.

The main task will be to spread some of the many truck loads of Mulch that have been placed around pods.

Other tasks include:

  • Tidying up and moving to RDA, a pile of seedling tubes in the now un-used Temporary Nursery area.
  • Small Olives along creek-line & around dam need to be plucked.

Please wear appropriate clothing, and BYO lunch, drinking water, snacks etc.

Of course, if you are unwell, please do the right thing and stay at home.

We will meet in the Majors Road Ranger Station carpark 15 minutes before Start time, and move out to the work area after Sign-In. If you are late, then, if you do not know where the group will be, you will need to ring one of the following.

Martin: 0403 804 306

Alan:   0411 595 910

Karen:  0479 048 394

Please park in the Ranger Station car park and walk to the site we are working on as described above, look out for people in the high-viz vests.  As the park is currently under construction we are trying to minimise the amount of vehicles entering the park, and we do not want general members of the public thinking that they can just drive in too!  If you do not have the capacity to walk that distance, please let us know ASAP or one of the phone numbers above, and one of our members transporting equipment will provide you with a lift into the park.

Please remember that we hold Bushcare Days on the first and third Sundays, second Saturday, of each month, and on each Wednesday morning. All are welcome.

June Bush Care Days are:

  • Each Wednesday at 9am
  • At Glenthonre NP-IY
    • 1st & 3rd Sunday, 4th & 18th June, 10-4pm
    • 2nd Saturday 10th June 10-4pm,
  • At RDA (Riding for Disabled) : Sat 24th June, 9-12pm.

We know the History Group will work on the history of the local area around Glenthorne, which may also include Marino, Hallett Cove Beach, Field River, Happy Valley, Sturt Gorge, and adjoining suburbs that have significant historical and heritage areas.  This will be up to the group to decide.

New Young People's Group

On Saturday 25th February, we had the initial meeting of a young people's group. We met at the Clubrooms of the Australian Plant Society (APS), in Goodwood.

Initially, this group will learn about Australian Plants, and will do workshops to grow them, particularly rare or endangered plant, but also other plants much needed at Glenthorne, as well as other Bushcare sites.

Future activités of the group is yet to be determined, and suggestions are welcome.

It is hoped that this group, Primary and Secondary school age, will be led by the young people themselves, and involve others as needed.

If you would like to know more, or have in mind school-age young people who would benefit from being involved in this group, then please let us know by replying to this email.
