Enjoyment Day - Sunday, the 21st of October!

NOTE: New times of access – 10.00am to 4.00pm this Saturday.

Our next Enjoyment Day will happen on Sunday, 21st of October – approx. 10 days time.

To celebrate the announcement of "Glenthorne National Park" we are hosting a Family Picnic Day at Glenthorne, on this day, so bring your picnic rug, or chairs, a healthy picnic basket, and enjoy meeting our Glenthorne National Park family. For more information, see the Flyer There will also be a BBQ provided. Rotary Flagstaff Hill may run this at a small charge or the Friends will run if for free. Details to be confirmed soon.

In Spring there is much to enjoy. Please join us and see why we are so excited about the State’s newest National Park.

Come to the Majors Road gates just before 10.00am, for an early start, or at 12 noon for the Picnic. If you are intending to come along a little later, the gates will be unlocked. Please make sure that you close and bolt the gate behind you once you have entered.

Parking is available across Majors Road in the IQRA College carpark. Please be careful crossing Majors Road. Walk down the road into the property (heading south) until you reach the large pine tree near the Old Barn. (Parking for disabled or elderly is available by turning right at the large pine tree and following the road to behind the old CSIRO buildings). All other visitors are asked to park in the IQRA College car park and walk in. Once you are at the large pine tree, follow the road through the gate, along the dirt track, to where you will see our gazebos.

Please always leave gates as you find them, as sheep may be grazing and the gate is opened / closed as required to control the sheep.

If you park on the bitumen, behind the CSIRO buildings, you will need to walk back down the track to where we will be enjoying ourselves. If you are unable to walk 500m along the dirt track, you can drive carefully to where we will be having the picnic.

Visitors are always welcome, and we are happy to show people around our revegetation sites and the heritage structures.

Please call Alan on 0411595910 if you have any difficulties but there will be volunteers on the gate from 12.00 noon.

If you are coming along, please respect the property and its wildlife and we hope you enjoy your visit.

Annual General Meeting

Our AGM will be:

• Held on Tuesday 23rd October, at 7:30pm,
• At the Hallett Cove Lutheran Church,
  20 Ragamuffin Dr, Hallett Cove
  (Ragamuffin Dr, off Ramrod Ave, and opposite the Cove Civic Centre entrance)
• Guest Speaker: Member(s) of the Glenthorne National Park team who will discuss progress with this exciting project and Rachel Godoy, Volunteer Support Officer with the NRM.
• All welcome.

November Enjoyment Day – Change of date to be advised!

Please note that our November Enjoyment Day (recorded on the FoG web site as happening on the 18^th of November) will not happen on this day. The Friends of Glenthorne have been invited to attend the NRM’s Volunteer Celebration event at Urrbrae Wetlands, Netherby from 10.00am – 3.00pm. If you are a Friends of Glenthorne volunteer and / or financial member, you are welcome to join us there, where we will be acknowledged as passing our 20^th anniversary. When we look back over that period, we realise that it has been a long struggle and we have lots of people to thank for such an amazing outcome – the Glenthorne National Park.

For those wanting to attend the Farm in November, we will advise the possible revised date for the Enjoyment Day / Working Bee as soon as it is confirmed.

Glenthorne National Park Update

• A new committee has been formed by DEW, called the "Glenthorne Partnership" and the members of this committee are appointed by the Minister, David Speirs from members of the partner "Friends of" groups. It will be chaired by David Greenhough, (from "Friends of the Lower Field River") and their first meeting was held on 27th Sept, at the Hallett Cove Civic Centre.
• The University and the SA Government have signed a memorandum of understanding which can be viewed here.
• As any progress is announced, we will share the good news with you.

Membership

Now is the perfect time to join the Friends of Glenthorne. Get involved in helping to plan the National Park or simply come along and help plant some shrubs and trees. If you aren’t able, simply join and come along to enjoy the views and fresh, clean air. Many interesting and fascinating birds are to be seen on a visit to Glenthorne Farm and at 1.00pm the Friends break for tea and coffee and a chat. Membership details are also found on our web site at http://www.friendsofglenthorne.org.au/wp-content/uploads/FoG_Membership_Form.pdf where you can download a membership form and payment can be made into our bank account (details also on the web site) or you can come along to one of our Enjoyment Days and pay there. Just $10.00 for individuals and $20.00 for families.

Grass Identification Worshop

Introduction to Grass Identification, by "Trees for Life" and presented by Ann Prescott

You may not know, but Grasses are valuable for Butterflies and other insects. WIth insects, come birds.

Format: 9:30am – 4pm classroom session

Course Content:

• Introduction to general botany and floral anatomy
• Characteristics of the major plant families
• How to use botanical and other plant identification book
• How to use a herbarium to develop your knowledge
• Practical plant identification of common species

Cost: Free for Trees For Life members and active Trees For Life volunteers. Annual membership of Trees For Life is $55 for family or $25 concession. See the TFL web site for booking details etc.

Volunteer growers - Trees for Life

Growing local native seedlings is a fun and rewarding experience for all ages, and a great way to take action for the land you love.

The "Trees for Life" growing season begins in November 2018 through to May 2019 - a 6 month commitment.

Grower workshops are held in October and November and offer all the information you need to successfully grow quality native seedlings. Workshops are free for volunteers who register to grow with us thanks to the support of SA Power Networks.

Plant Foster Care

Have you ever wanted to be a Plant Foster Parent but no-one has ever given you the chance?

The Friends of Glenthorne have quite several native plant seedlings in boxes that need to be looked after until planting season next year (After the first Autumn rains in April/May 2019)

The boxes (about the size of Fruit Box, with about 50 or so seedlings) will typically need to be watered daily, especially during extremely hot weather.

If you are interested in looking after some, then please contact us, and (if you don't live too far), we can deliver them, and pick them up again next year.

Volunteer Day - Natural Resource Management

Network with like-minded volunteers, celebrate your achievements, join in cultural awareness activities and hear from Chris Daniels about fauna in the AMLR region. Morning tea and lunch will be provided.
