May Enjoyment Day

Our next Enjoyment Day is Sunday, 15th May, 2015 from 10.00am until 2.00pm, and all are welcome.

Join us for a walk along the creek line to check on past revegetation efforts and to also survey the bird life. Bird records collected by the Friends over a number of years, currently number around 90 different species and numbers have been increasing in recent years. It is always interesting to see what water birds are currently utilising the large dam area as the water levels fall over summer. We will be watering the seedlings which were planted in recent months and also reviewing the current weed situation for action in coming months.

We usually have tea or coffee and a discussion of recent events from around 1.00 pm.

We will be on site from 10.00am to 2.00pm and if you arrive after 10.00am please call Alan on 0411 595 910 for entry instructions.

Unlocking the Secrets of Glenthorne

The Friends have an event at the farm on Sunday 8th May, 2016 (Mother’s Day).

If you would like to assist us with this event, please call Alan on 0411595910.

The event is on Mother’s Day and we are short of volunteers and would appreciate your assistance. We will be starting early on the day to ensure that everything is ready.

Take the family for a Mother’s Day outing to Unlocking the Secrets of Glenthorne, a State History Festival event. This event at Glenthorne, Majors Road, O’Halloran Hill, is on Sunday 8th May starting at 11:30am. Walk through the Heritage Precinct and learn about Glenthorne’s early history. The ruins date from the 1840s and were built by Major Thomas O’Halloran, South Australia’s first Commandant of Police. The day also includes a talk about Glenthorne between 1910 and 1948 when it was the Australian Army’s No. 9 Remount Depot. Did you know that over 17,000 horses and riders left South Australia for the theatres of war in World War 1 and most were trained at Glenthorne.

There will also be an exhibition of artefacts and items on loan from the SA Army Museum.

Glenthorne is an exciting place - join us, you’ll love it.

A sausage sizzle (small cost) and tea and coffee (free) will be available.

Bookings are essential - ring 0428315266, or book through the Website:

Entry: Gold coin donation – funds support the work of the Friends of Glenthorne Inc.

Meet promptly at 11.30am or just prior, at the gates (opposite O’Halloran Hill TAFE) on Majors Road, O’Halloran Hill.

Walking shoes, weather appropriate attire and moderate fitness required.

Nari Reserve

The reserve along Nari Drive will be the focus of our efforts in July. Marion Council will be co-ordinating this venture, to revegetate this area as a Native Grassy Woodland.   We are excited to be involved in this. There will be a Sheidow Park, Trott Park letterbox drop closer to the date on the details on how local residents can be involved.  More about this later.
