This Sunday, (5/1/2025) is the First Bushcare Day for 2025, and our next Friends Bushcare Day.

While the weeds are dry, it is a good time to slash and to spray Phylaris that is growing. There may also be seeds to collect, such as Kangaroo Grass, Mulenbeckia.

We will meet at Carpark One (Behind the Shearing Shed). To get there, follow the Park Road down from the Ranger’s Station, then turn right into Carpark 1.

• 2nd Saturday 10-4pm (Second Reveg Grid:J7-J10)
• 3rd Sunday 10-4pm (Native Grass Compound Grid K6)

At RDA (Riding for Disabled) 

• 4th Saturday:   9-12pm  (RDA Front Garden)

Always be mindful of the forecast weather and our Hot Weather Policy.  If the forecasted temperature is 34 degrees or higher, the Bushcare Day is cancelled. If you are unwell, please do the right thing and stay at home.

Bushcare: It’s not Rocket Science, it’s much more difficult than that.

The past month has been rather busy.

• Dabbing & Swabbing each individual Variegated and Ox Tongue Thistle in the Community Grassland.
• Mowing Thistle Heads in the Community Grassland
• Collecting Golden Wattle seeds
• Mulching near the Majors Road Entry area
• Slashing around CarPark 1 Pond
• Slashing RDA along Majors Rd

David Speirs is still offering Tours of Glenthorne, covering the Past, Present, and Future of the Park.

As you may know, the Department of Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) are setting up a Propagation Nursery for us on the "Riding for Disabled" site.

This nursery will be propagating the thousands of plants needed for Glenthorne National Park, and for the Off-set planting of the Majors Road On/Off Ramps to the Southern Expressway. 

We are super-exited about this, since it will give you a very different and enjoyable volunteer experience.  The aim is to focus on the smaller plants of the Grey Box Community, such as daisies, saltbushes, ground-covers and lilies, which are so important for our native birds and insects.

We will be propagation by seeds, and by cuttings. If you are interested in being involved in this, then please reply to this email, to provide an expression of interest. 

We will keep you informed of the progress of this.

Some of you might have seen the magnificent photography of Marianne Broug, either in exhibitions, on cards, or very regularly on social media. You may have also seen the artistry in the posters at the Friends of Parks and Nature Forum that Marianne created  -  full of colour and knowledge. Marianne has very generously donated these files to Friends of Belair NP, to print, sell and raise funds. 

All photos were taken in Belair National Park and all profits will go back into protecting and enhancing the habitat of these organisms.

The only drawback is they are not good to post. At the moment these will be available for pickup from the Belair NP office. If that's a problem, please email Pamela and you can discuss options.

The Australian Plant Society, Adelaide Group, are requesting anyone interested in being on their committee.  

They have monthly member meetings on a Thursday evening once a month, at the Community Hall in Arthur St, (next to the Unley Shopping Centre)

They say that "A Change is as Good as a Holiday", (and others say "An Australian Plant better than an Exotic one") and maybe you are looking for a new lease on life, a new source of Wisdom and Knowledge.

To help you decide, maybe just come along to the next APS (Adelaide) meeting, so you can meet the group first.  

Their next meeting will be at 7:30pm, on Thursday 16th January, at the Community Centre, Arthur St, Unley.
