Glenthorne National Park Wednesday Bush Care Day

Last week the Wednesday Bush Care group went weeding he Pods that were planted out earlier this year.

As you can imagine, with all the rain we've had this year, the germination rate was excellent, and the weeds have done very well.

The Wednesday group were able to weed the whole of one Pod, and half of another pod in the time they were at the park. Did you know, that it takes about 18 volunteer hours to de-weed one Pod.

At Glenthorne there are numerous un-weeded Pods, and we are keen to reduce the number of weeds in these pods, to give our native plants a better chance to survive and thrive this summer.

If you are able to help for even one hour, it will make a big difference, and a wonderful encouragement for the regular volunteers, and be greatly appreciated.

If you are willing and able, then please meet at the Ranger's Station Carpark at 9am.

The suggested items to bring along/wear:

  • long pants and sleeves,
  • hat, sun-screen
  • enclosed shoes or boots
  • snacks / lunch
  • drinking water

Please remember that we hold Bush Care Days on the first and Third Sundays, second Saturday, of each month, along with each Wednesday morning. All are welcome.

    • 2nd Saturday 10 Dec 9-4pm,

Nari Reserve Unveiling

The City of Marion have sent out an invitation to the un-veiling of a Sign at Nari Reserve at Sheidow Park from 10.30am on Wednesday, December 7, to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

The City of Marion has received funding from the Australian Government Planting Trees for The Queen’s Jubilee Program for a revegetation project in the reserve. The Hon. Amanda Rishworth MP, Federal Member for Kingston and Minister for Social Services, will join the Mayor of Marion, Kris Hanna, in unveiling a special commemorative sign in Nari Reserve.

The funding is being used to help create a canopy cover of 20% vegetation in Nari Reserve to improve visual amenity, increase the biodiversity value, expand green corridors, reduce noise pollution, and cool the area.

A coffee van will be at the event providing hot beverages and morning tea will be provided.

The Council are hoping to see you there.

Glenthorne Community Grassland

We are very pleased to let you know that a PhD student at the University of Adelaide, Max has received a Greening Adelaide grant to recreate Glenthorne National Park - Ityamaiitpinna Yarta five hectares of a high biodiversity value endangered Grey Box Derived Grasslands ecological community through innovative design and emerging direct seeding methods. The project also aims to use the design, implementation, and management of the grassland to promote ecological knowledge through key partnerships.

The project will partner with Nature Play SA to co-design the grassland for nature education for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) courses, including at Urrbrae high school and at the University of Adelaide.

Both the inherent design of the grassland and creative interpretation through digital and physical content enhance educational opportunities at Glenthorne National Park.

Finally, the project will be systematically documented as part of a PhD which will also involve the development of a management plan to be implemented by the Friends of Glenthorne group, to care for the project in the long term.

This project is already underway, with the site on Glenthorne being prepared for the first stage to reduce the number of weed seeds in the planned area.

Hozelock Wonder Weeder

Do you have a Hozelock Weed Spray Wand, like the one in the picture above?

These Spray Weed Wands were available from Mitre10 Hardware stores, but are not available anymore.

The Friends of Glenthorne would find these very handy to spray the weeds that are in close proximity to native plants, and to keep our new Paths and Trails weed-free.

If you have one, but do not use your Hozelock Wonder Weeder and do not need it anymore, and would like it to go to a nice home, then the Friends of Glenthorne would like to Beg, Borrow or S.. (purchase) it from you.

Please reply to this email if you can help.

Updated Revegetation Management Plan

Revegetation Manager, Sam Chesson, has released an updated "Friends of Glenthorne Park - Ityamaiitpinna Yarta" Site Plan.

Southern Expressway On/Off Ramps Majors Rd

The Friends have been concerned with these proposed On/Off Ramps, impacting Glenthorne National park.

The Dept. of Infrastructure & Planning (DIT) have  released a plan for the proposed On/Off ramps for the Southern Expressway at Majors Rd, O'Halloran Hill.

The key features of the proposed concept include:

  • New on and off ramps – to the Southern Expressway for access to and from the Adelaide CBD and North South Corridor.
  • New on and off ramps – to the Southern Expressway for access to and from the southern suburbs, North South Corridor and Fleurieu Peninsula.
  • Upgrading of the Majors Road Bridge – to accommodate six lanes, including two through lanes and a dedicated right turn lane, onto the Southern Expressway, in each direction.
  • Widening of Majors Road – for the extent of works to provide two through lanes in both directions.
  • Installation of traffic signals - at the junction of Majors Road and Adams Road which will incorporate an access to Sam Willoughby International BMX Facility and O’Halloran Hill Recreation Park.
  • A new underpass - ensuring continous access and use of the Patrick Jonker Veloway.
  • New Shared Use Path - on the southern side of Majors Road to connect Main South Road to Lonsdale Highway

(undertake in conjunction with City of Marion).

You can still have your say on this plan, since The Department will continue to engage with key stakeholders, local council and the community as the project progresses.
