The past few months has been rather busy, with a number of activities over and beyond our usual Bushcare activities.
- On the 5th June we held a General Meeting for all our members and friends with a talk on the local Geology by Professor Patrick James. Professor James informed us about how amazing our local geology is with landscape folding from the Sturt Gorge to Hallett Cove. The Professor is excited about developing a Geotrail in the area, and even presented a draft brochure, calling the local feature the Ityamaiitpinna Great Incline. We hope to hear more of this when the Professor returns from Europe.
- On the 21st July we launched the 2nd Edition of the Glenthorne History Book, and a number of notable speakers entertained the gathering near the Old Barn, despite the cold wind which was blowing that day. This event (which was videoed) was well attended despite the weather. A good number of, this much improved edition of our book, were sold on the day.
- On 21st August was our AGM, which was very well attended. We were treated to a wonderful talk by Mr. Neville Bonny, a celebrated author of many quality books on Australian plants. Neville took us on a journey covering his 60 years involvement with our Native Plants. Neville did not always have the excellent propagation information that we have today, which makes his efforts over his life are not only amazing, but also ground-breaking. Unfortunately this talk was not videoed, but we plan to have a detailed article of this talk on our website in the near future.
- We have had the Iqra College, Woodcroft College, Royal Commonwealth Society of SA and the IGA-Greening Australia planting events.
- We had a great time planting many Wallaby Grass seedlings in the black cracking clay in Zone 1, the North West corner of the park, along Majors Rd. This area, known to us as "Chris' Paddock" after Chris Ide, who has persisted there for the past 4 years, planting, watering, and caring for this hard to manage area. Chris' much appreciated efforts there are starting to show signs of all his hard work.

As you may know, the Department of Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) are setting up a Propagation Nursery for us on the "Riding for Disabled" site.
This nursery will be propagating the thousands of plants needed for Glenthorne National Park, and for the Off-set planting of the Majors Road On/Off Ramps to the Southern Expressway.
We are super-exited about this, since it will give you a very different and enjoyable volunteer experience. The aim is to focus on the smaller plants of the Grey Box Community, such as daisies, saltbushes, which are so important for our native birds and insects.
We will be propagation by seeds, and by cuttings. If you are interested in being involved in this, then please reply to this email, to provide an expression of interest.
We will keep you informed of the progress of this. |
