This Sunday, (2/6/2024) is the next Friends Bushcare Day.

We will meet at 10am at Carpark 1. To get there, follow the Park Road down from the Ranger’s Station to the "T" Junction then turn right into Carpark 1, which is behind the Shearing Shed and Main Shed.  From there we will move to the Work Area.

Always be mindful of the forecast weather and our Hot Weather Policy.  If the forecasted temperature is 34 degrees or higher, the Bushcare Day is cancelled. If you are unwell, please do the right thing and stay at home.

• Prof Patrick James will give a talk to inform and enthuse us about the fabulous and world class Geological and Landscape Geoheritage that Glenthorne National Park contains.
• Pat has travelled  over the  years, and also quite recently, to many international sites where equivalent Geoheritage is interpreted and displayed, particularly in UNESCO Global Geoparks.
• Glenthorne Park could readily be classed amongst the finest of these parks.
• How can Glenthorne's Geoheritage be most appropriately presented to visitors to the Park?
• Prof. Patrick is the Adjunct Professor, UniSA STEM and Honorary Research Associate, Nature Foundation

NATIVE PLANT SALE in conjunction with COOTS (Conservation Of Our Threatened Species) a branch of the Australian Plant Soc SA) and other environmental groups including the Friends of Glenthorne National Park.

THIS SUNDAY 2nd JUNE 2024 from 1.00pm to 4.00pm. All welcome.

If you are interested in conservation and biodiversity, then this is a great event to buy some native plants for your garden or some books about plants and discover information which will help your own native garden at home thrive.

This will support native birds, animals, butterflies, and insects make your garden their home.

On Tuesday 15th May, we were delighted to welcome five YELP teams from local schools.

YELP stands for "Youth Environmental Leadership Program". The schools that attended were Iqra College, Corromandel Valley Primary School, Blackwood Primary School, Thiele Primary School, Happy Valley Primary School.

There were about 40 students in all that attended, and were involved in the first Plantings for this year. 

The area planted is a new area, just south of the Munition Huts. The next time you visit Glenthorne, check out this area, and see what a magnificent effort these students did.

Many thanks to Drakes Supermarkets for their donation to fund this event, to Greening Australia for running this event, and Green Adelaide for Co-ordinating this event.

We hope to have many more of these YELP events at Glenthorne.

The much awaited Second Edition of our history book, "Glenthorne - A definite history, an indefinite politics" will be launched on Sunday 21 July, 2024.

This grand event will occur at Glenthorne National Park, Majors Rd, O'Halloran Hill, in the Visitor Hub area, starting at 11:00am

After the formalities, and weather permitting, you may wish to join a guided tour of the special planted areas, and the Heritage Buildings.

If the weather is kind, the afternoon will conclude at 2pm

The Friends of Glenthorne can now accept In-Person Credit Card Payments. This may be an easier way for you to pay for your memberships. Ask about this at your next Bush Care day.

South Australia’s new Biodiversity Act

The State Government is in the process of developing a new Biodiversity Act for South Australia as one of its election commitments. Our state does not have a dedicated Act to protect and restore biodiversity; instead provisions exist across multiple laws, which has led to many gaps in protections.

As we know, biodiversity is under threat globally, and South Australia is no exception. We need this new legislation to be bold and strong – to ensure robust, science-based decision making, accountable and transparent governance, respect and empowerment for First Nations, and to establish goals and resources for action.

As you may know, the Department of Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) are setting up a Propagation Nursery for us on the "Riding for Disabled" site.

This nursery will be propagating the 10's of thousands of plants needed for Glenthorne, and for the Off-set planting of the Majors Road On/Off Ramps to the Southern Expressway. 

We are super-exited about this, since it will give you a very different and enjoyable volunteer experience.

We will be propagation by seeds, and by cuttings. If you are interested in being involved in this, then please reply to this email, to provide an expression of interest. 

We will keep you informed of the progress of this.
