Glenthorne National Park BushCare

This Sunday, (17/9/2023) is the Third Sunday Friends Bushcare Day for September.  Apologies for no eNewsletter in July, and this one being quite late, but it has been a very busy time.

The weather forecast looks very good, but, what do we expect for Spring.

Planting is really close to ending this season, but there is much to do.  We want to set up some Bird perch logs in the North Western Pods, set up some Reptile Hotels, and sneak in some Grass planting, Tree-Guard some recently planted Golden Wattle. Enough variety for Spring, eh?

Other tasks include:

  • Small Olives along creek-line & around dam need to be plucked.  We now also have a Tree-Popper, to tackle the larger Olive seedlings, for any willing volunteers.  Raking Olive seeds under existing, dead trees, drill-n-fill.

Please wear appropriate clothing, and BYO lunch, drinking water, snacks etc.

Of course, if you are unwell, please do the right thing and stay at home.

Though the Park is now open, we will still meet in the Majors Road Ranger Station carpark 15 minutes before Start time, and move out to the work areas after Sign-In. If you are late, then, if you do not know where the group will be, you will need to ring one of the following.

Martin: 0403 804 306

Alan:   0411 595 910

Karen:  0479 048 394

Please remember that we hold Bushcare Days on the first and third Sundays, second Saturday, of each month, and on each Wednesday morning. All are welcome.

October Bush Care Days are:

  • Each Wednesday at 9am
  • At Glenthonre NP-IY
    • 1st & 3rd Sunday, 1st & 15th October, 10-4pm
    • 3rd Saturday 21st October 10-4pm,
  • At RDA (Riding for Disabled) : Sat 28th October, 9-12pm.
City of Marion - Weed Workshop

In the City of Marion volunteer survey late last year, many respondents mentioned wanting more training on weeds, so here is one opportunity to increase your skills and knowledge in identifying them.

Love our Trees

The City of Marion "Living Smarties", with support from Sustainable Communities SA, are running a program called Love Our Local Trees to celebrate the great things about trees in our streets, private gardens and parks. They are hoping that residents who love a tree in their local area can share why they love their tree in a short survey by 31st August (link below).

Their stories will be shared in the Nature Festival Tree Celebration event (Saturday, 14 October 2023, 11 am – 2 pm).

To find out more info and to access the survey go to Love Our Local Trees | Sustainable Communities SA

Butterfly Project Update

As you may remember, the Friends of Glenthorne received a Green-Adelaide Grant to increase the Butterfly plants on the park.  In July we held a Community Planting event, which saw nearly 2,500 Gahnia plants placed in the Eastern Gully, near the very old Grey Box tree. These plants host the Flame Sedge Skipper butterfly.

We also planted 200 Cullen Australicum (Tall Scurf Pea) across the whole park, in each of the 48 densely planted "Pods". These are the host plant for the Chequered SwallowTail Butterfly.

Many thanks to Heysen Kitchen Cafe (aka Narina and Rusty) for supplying lunch on the day for our planting volunteers.

Did you know the "Heysen Kitchen Cafe" ("HKC", on Heysen Drive, Trott Park) are now also open on Thursday and Friday nights, until 8pm?

Acknowledgement of Country

The Friends of Glenthorne acknowledge that Glenthorne National Park - Ityamaiitpinna Yarta is part of the traditional lands of the Kaurna people and respect their elders past, present and emerging.

We appreciate the Kaurna people's innate and deep spiritual connection with the land and waters of Glenthorne and aspire to work alongside them in taking care of this land and community.

The Friends of Glenthorne are very keen to spend time with our First Nations people, to work with and together to care for Glenthorne, to try to restore Glenthorne to what this land used to be, and in our way to contribute to closing the Gap that exists for so many of our First Nations people.  In a few weeks, we all are given the right to direct our Government in this by voting in the Referendum for a Constitutional Recognition of a Voice for First Nations.

We hope you consider your choice carefully and read well the cases for "Yes" and "No" to this Voice.  You can read these cases in a pamphlet, available at the URL below, on the Australian Electoral Commission's website.

Yes/No case pamphlet - Australian Electoral Commission (aec.gov.au).

There are now also key lobby groups that are promoting their views on this referendum question.

See the bottom of the Cases Pamphlet for Yes/No for further information, or:

  • For the “Yes Vote” See https://www.yes23.com.au/ and see their case points for their view. On their website menu “Why Yes?"

  • For the :No” Vote, ‘Australians for Unity’. It is a merger of two groups, Recognise a Better Way (https://www.recogniseabetterway.org.au/) and Fair Australia (https://www.fairaustralia.com.au/).  See their case points for their view on the “Fair Australia" website, "Why Support No”.

  • Many of our nation’s churches have direct involvement with our First Nations peoples, and their views may also be helpful to you, since they have shared both the successes and set backs of helping to “Close the Gap"
On the website for the "National Council of Churches in Australia”  https://www.ncca.org.au is the section "Churches on a Voice to Parliament” which has links to the statements from the various churches.
