Glenthorne National Park BushCare

This Saturday, (12/8/2023) is the Second Saturday Friends Bushcare Day for August.  Apologies for no eNewsletter in July, and this one being late, but it has been a very busy time.

The weather forecast looks fairly bleak, but, what do we expect for Winter. We hopefully will be able to dodge the showers.

The main tasks will be to continue planting the remaining plants in the Playground Area, the North Eastern pods, and the western gully.

Other tasks include:

  • Small Olives along creek-line & around dam need to be plucked.  We now also have a Tree-Popper, to tackle the larger Olive seedlings, for any willing volunteers.

Please wear appropriate clothing, and BYO lunch, drinking water, snacks etc.

Of course, if you are unwell, please do the right thing and stay at home.

Though the Park is now open, we will still meet in the Majors Road Ranger Station carpark 15 minutes before Start time, and move out to the work areas after Sign-In. If you are late, then, if you do not know where the group will be, you will need to ring one of the following.

Martin: 0403 804 306

Alan:   0411 595 910

Karen:  0479 048 394

Please remember that we hold Bushcare Days on the first and third Sundays, second Saturday, of each month, and on each Wednesday morning. All are welcome.

  • At Glenthonre NP-IY
    • 1st & 3rd Sunday, 6th & 20th August, 10-4pm
    • 2nd Saturday 12th August 10-4pm,
  • At RDA (Riding for Disabled) : Sat 26th August, 9-12pm.
Glenthorne Finally Open

This long awaited Opening has finally happened. The Whole Park is now open to the Public.

The new Nature Playground is amazing, and has been overwhelmingly received by young and old alike.  A real credit to the Dept. of Environment & Water and The City of Marion, and to the playground construction team from "Climbing Tree".

You can now drive right into the park in the Playground (Heritage) Precinct, and start your Play, or walks from one of the car-parks there.

Butterfly Project Update

As you may remember, the Friends of Glenthorne received a Green-Adelaide Grant to increase the Butterfly plants on the park.  In July we held a Community Planting event, which saw nearly 2,500 Gahnia plants placed in the Eastern Gully, near the very old Grey Box tree. These plants host the Flame Sedge Skipper butterfly.

We also planted 200 Cullen Australicum (Tall Scurf Pea) across the whole park, in each of the 48 densely planted "Pods". These are the host plant for the Chequered SwallowTail Butterfly.

Many thanks to Heysen Kitchen Cafe (aka Narina and Rusty) for supplying lunch on the day for our planting volunteers.

Did you know the HKC (on Heysen Drive, Trott Park) are now also open on Thursday and Friday nights, until 8pm?
