Glenthorne National Park Bush Care Day

This Easter Saturday, (8/4/2023) is our first Friends Bushcare Day for April.

Not only is it Easter, but there is rain forecast for the next few days, including Saturday, so if you really want or need a bush care experience, then please come along. The ground will be quite soft, so we will be pulling olive seedlings at the northern end of the main dam.

Please wear appropriate clothing, and BYO lunch, drinking water, snacks etc.

Of course, if you are unwell, please do the right thing and stay at home.

We will meet in the Majors Road Ranger Station carpark from 8.45 am, and we will move to the work area at 9:00 am. If you are late, then, if you do not know where the group will be, you will need to ring one of the following.

Martin: 0403 804 306

Alan:   0411 595 910

Karen:  0479 048 394

Please park in the Ranger Station car park and walk to the site we are working on as described above, look out for people in the high-viz vests.  As the park is currently under construction we are trying to minimise the amount of vehicles entering the park, and we do not want general members of the public thinking that they can just drive in too!  If you do not have the capacity to walk that distance, please let us know ASAP or one of the phone numbers above, and one of our members transporting equipment will provide you with a lift into the park.

Please remember that we hold Bushcare Days on the first and third Sundays, second Saturday, of each month, and on each Wednesday morning. All are welcome.

April Bush Care Days are:

  • Each Wednesday at 9am
  • At Glenthonre NP-IY
    • 1st & 3rd Sunday, 2nd & 16th Apr, 10-4pm
    • 2nd Saturday 8th Apr 9-4pm,
  • At RDA (Riding for Disabled) : Sat 22th, 9-12pm.
Vale Kath Rayner

The Friends of Glenthorne are very sad of the death of Kath Rayner, one of our committee members.

Kath was a very active member, hosted committee meetings at her home, and propagated many plants, including many from the Old Greybox tree, which are planted out on Glenthorne.

Kath died peacefully at home on Wed 22nd March. Her funeral will be held on Thursday 13th April, 1:30pm at the Heysen Chapel, Centennial Park.

Riding for the Disabled Garden

The Friends of Glenthonrne has started planting out a Garden at the Riding for Disabled site, on Majors Rd,  opposite Glenthorne.

As you may know, the Riding for Disabled is on land that is part of the Glenthorne National Park, and is leased to them from the SA Government.

The RDA site will also require lots of future work, so if you are interested in helping us there, and building a good relationship with RDA, then we have Bush Care days there starting 9am on the 4th Saturday of each month.

New Young People's Group

On Saturday 25th February, we had the initial meeting of a young people's group. We met at the Clubrooms of the Australian Plant Society (APS), in Goodwood.

Initially, this group will learn about Australian Plants, and will do workshops to grow them, particularly rare or endangered plant, but also other plants much needed at Glenthorne, as well as other Bushcare sites.

Future activités of the group is yet to be determined, and suggestions are welcome.

It is hoped that this group, Primary and Secondary school age, will be led by the young people themselves, and involve others as needed.

If you would like to know more, or have in mind school-age young people who would benefit from being involved in this group, then please let us know by replying to this email.

Crows threaten significant urban trees in Kings Reserve

Did you know that the development for the new "Crows" home ground will remove many significant Eucalypt trees in the Kings Reserve in Torrensville?

The Bushcare team at Kings Park need your support to save these very precious urban forest trees. See their webpage here.

No more development on our Parklands

Save Mirnu Wirra/Golden Wattle Park

Did you know that this park is very precious parklands? You may have seen news coverage of the protest. Our current government are planning to develop there. How can they do that, especially without community support, or consultation? There were surveyors on that site back in February this year,  There are MUCH better alternate sites that don't reduce our Urban open space.  PLEASE have your say. Our Government need to know what you think.  See Saving Mirnu Wirra webpage for how to do this.
