Glenthorne National Park Bush Care Day |
| |
|
This coming Sunday, (5/3/2023) is our first Friends Bushcare Day for March.
The main activities will be Halo slashing of Phylaris around the Rushes, in the Second Reveg area, Hand weeding and seed collecting.
The weather looks quite promising, so you may like to be prepared with sunscreen and a hat, and some brown paper bags for seed collecting.
Please BYO lunch, drinking water, snacks etc. If you are unwell, please do the right thing and stay at home.
We will meet in the Majors Road Ranger Station carpark from 9.45 am, and we will move to the work area at 10am. If you are late, then, if you do not know where the group will be, you will need to ring one of the following.
Martin: 0403 804 306
Alan: 0411 595 910
Karen: 0479 048 394
Please park in the Ranger Station car park and walk to the site we are working on as described above, look out for people in the high vis vests. As the park is currently under construction we are trying to minimise the amount of vehicles entering the park, and we do not want general members of the public thinking that they can just drive in too! If you do not have the capacity to walk that distance, please reply to this email, before Sunday, or Ring the Phone number above, and one of our members transporting equipment will provide you with a lift into the park.
For those of you that need to drive in to bring in equipment for the group, please shut the gate into the park as much as you can and place any orange bollards back in place in order to prevent unwanted vehicles entering the park. Please adhere to any other signage and bunting relating to the visitor hub construction site, this area is off limits to the public and volunteers, unless permission is given by the Project Officer or Senior Ranger Bec Brown for the specific day and activity.
The suggested items to bring along/wear:
- long pants and sleeves,
- hat, sun-screen
- enclosed shoes or boots
- snacks / lunch
- drinking water
Please remember that we hold Bushcare Days on the first and Third Sundays, second Saturday, of each month, along with each Wednesday morning. All are welcome.

Riding for the Disabled Garden |
| |
|
The Friends of Glenthonrne has started planting out a Garden at the Riding for Disabled site, on Majors Rd, opposite Glenthorne.
As you may know, the Riding for Disabled is on land that is part of the Glenthorne National Park, and is leased to them from the SA Government.
The RDA site will also require lots of future work, so if you are interested in helping us there, and building a good relationship with RDA, then we have Bush Care days there starting 9am on the 4th Saturday of each month. |

Glenthorne National Park – Ityamaiitpinna Yarta History Group |
| |
|
Are you interested in History ?
Did you know that there are many heritage buildings and ruins within Glenthorne National Park -Ityamaiitpinna Yarta, and the surrounding areas? There are stories and artefacts that are part of the land and its uses, which need to be available to visitors to the Park and the wider community.
You are invited to join with others in the formation of
Glenthorne National Park-Ityamaiitpinna Yarta History Group
who could work to:
- Establish a display of the artefacts in existing buildings;
- Organise Open Days with Volunteer Guides;
- . Research various parts of Glenthorne history;
- Create a website;
- Continue with further work interpreting the history to present to visitors.
We would also focus on other areas with heritage values including Hallett Cove and Marino Conservation Parks, and the Field River Valley. This group would be separate from the existing Friends of Glenthorne National Park group whose focus is bushcare.
Depending on interest a public meeting will be convened in the near future.

On Saturday 25th February, we had the initial meeting of a young people's group. We met at the Clubrooms of the Australian Plant Society (APS), in Goodwood.
Initially, this group will learn about Australian Plants, and will do workshops to grow them, particularly rare or endangered plant, but also other plants much needed at Glenthorne, as well as other Bushcare sites.
Future activités of the group is yet to be determined, and suggestions are welcome.
It is hoped that this group, Primary and Secondary school age, will be lead by the young people themselves, and involve others as needed.
The next meeting will be held at 11am, at the APS Clubrooms, on the corner of Richards Tce and Railway N Terrace, Wayville. See GoogleMaps
If you would like to know more, or have in mind school-age youg people who would benefit from being involved in this group, then please let us know by replying to this email. |
