Friends of Glenthorne National Park Newsletter

Ninna marni (hello, how are you?) Friends,

Hi everyone.

This Saturday is the second Saturday of November and another Bushcare Day at the Glenthorne National Park Ityamaiitpinna Yarta. Given the continued rain we have had in recent days, the opportunity remains to get some more plants into the ground, and we hope you can join us. We will also be weeding, slashing, mulching, and watering.

If you are free, please meet in the carpark of the Rangers Station on Saturday morning (13th of November) at 9.45am so that the necessary signing in can take place and some brief instructions can be given. We will take the opportunity to get some more plants into the ground before summer. If you are available later in the day, you can still join us. We can be found working south of the Ranger Station on War Horse Drive, which leads to the Munitions Huts. Just look for the volunteers in hi-vis vests.

The suggested items to bring along:

  • Long pants and sleeves,
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Enclosed shoes – boots may be a good option this Saturday
  • Snacks
  • Drinking water
  • Rain jacket and boots are always handy to have, just in case.
  • Chair if you are staying for lunch

We do operate under current Covid-19 restrictions. If you are staying for lunch, please BYO lunch, chair etc.

Saturday’s weather looks reasonable, just the sort of day to get out to the National Park and enjoy planting a few native plants. We hope you can join us this Saturday.

Nakutha (goodbye) and all the best,

Alan Burns

What's happening around Glenthorne

There are some good things happening.

  • The RSPCA will be building a $23 million headquarters across Majors Road from the Glenthorne property. This will include a native animal hospital, education facilities, and reduced traditional activities involving cats and dogs.
  • The Friends have secured a grant for a Help Us Grow Native Plants at Home project, where we will be looking for volunteers to train and help us to grow 5,000 native plans for planting next winter. If you, your family, or your school or your scout group or friends are interested, please call Alan on 0411595910. We will provide a training workshop, and everything needed to grow native plants for the National Park. Volunteers just need to be committed to watering their plants over summer, no experience necessary.
  • The Friends have also submitted a grant application to build a native plant nursery, to be in the Riding for the Disabled site, across the road from the Glenthorne property. This is an extremely exciting project, and we are looking for volunteers, especially retired or semi-retired tradies who can help us to build this facility. Again, if you are interested in helping us, please call Alan on 0411595910 to register your interest.

Heritage Update

Volunteers from Archaeology at Flinders Uni are meeting each Friday to record and catalogue the many diverse artefacts in the Glenthorne Artefact Collection - does anyone know what the black screw caps on Woodruff lemonade bottles were made from?
