Welcome to December FoG News!
Last month the activities at Glenthorne Farm were restricted due to the time of year. The grey cracking clay soil has dried out and become extremely hard. We watered the Acacia acenaecia, Hardenbergia and Callistemon seedlings along the fence line and weeded the Native Grass Compound. Despite the periods of hot weather many of the grasses and the Calocephalus citreus (Lemon Beauty Heads) are doing well.
- We have also continued to network with other environmental groups in the south
- After the November Enjoyment Day (Working Bee) we assisted the Friends if the O’Halloran Hill Recreation Park remove 100’s of tree guards. Thanks to this group for giving the Glenthorne Friends a trailer load of guards which will be very useful in coming months.
- Some of our group have been regularly attending the City of Marion “Common Thread” meetings which involve speakers who focus on sustainable living and recently we contributed to a focus group looking at the programme for 2016.
- Others of our group have contributed to the planning for the 2016 Friends of Parks Forum which will be held at the new Cove Civic Centre next year from 14th – 16th October, with Field Trips to local parks. Up to 200 volunteers from Friends groups from all over SA are expected to come together for a weekend of informative speakers, captivating tours of local conservation parks and a chance to renew old friendships and meet new friends.
- The "Glenthorne Farm Community Vision 2015” report has been finalised and printed following our Community Vision Day back on the 24th May this year. We will be posting copies to members and contacting associates to obtain postal addresses and ensure that this report is distributed as widely as possible. Electronic copies are available on our website. We are excited about the future at Glenthorne, and will continue to strive to achieve the Goals and Aims proposed by the Vision Day. Special thanks to David Speirs MP and the City of Marion (esp Mayor, Kris Hanna) for his recent efforts to get the communities message through to the leaders of our State.
2015 Christmas Event
Tuesday 15th December (Next Tuesday) Come along and enjoy reminising over the year, meet new people, and
At the Seacliffe Hotel, (On the corner of Wheatland Ave and The Esplande, Seacliffe) starting at 6:30pm.
December Enjoyment Day
Our next Enjoyment Day is Sunday, 20th December, 2015 from 10.00am until 2.00pm, and all are welcome.
Join us for a walk along the creek line to check on past revegetation efforts and to also survey the bird life. Bird records collected by the Friends over a number of years, currently number around 90 different species and numbers have been increasing in recent years. It is always interesting to see what water birds are currently utilising the large dam area as the water levels fall over summer. We will also be collecting seed for propagation in the coming weeks.
We usually have tea or coffee and a discussion of recent events from around 1.00 pm.
We will be on site from 10.00am to 2.00pm and if you arrive after 10.00am please call Alan on 0411 595 910 for entry instructions.
2016 Activities
2016 is fast approaching and we have a number of special events in the pipeline, despite our continued development of our revegetation areas and the Native Grass Compound.
-
The Friends of Glenthorne look forward to assisting Associate Professor David Paton plant understorey native plants in his 5 hectare patch of Grey Box Grassy Woodland once the winter rains begin. It will be wonderful to contribute to this important patch of local biodiversity while at the same time learn from one of our best known revegetation and ornithological experts.
-
This coming winter we are also looking forward to working on the City of Marion – Nari Reserve Grey Box Planting Project. The Friends have met Biodiversity Officer, Jerry Smith, at the reserve to survey options and plans are underway to start working on the reserve next year with approximately 500 native Grey Box woodland plants. Attempts will be made to include local residents as well as local school students in a Community Planting Event. More information to come later on when this will be held and how you can be involved.
